The rescue, confirmed by the Kwara State Police Command, took place in a forest within the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
However, the rescue operation was marred by a confrontation between police and soldiers.
According to the Kwara police, the rescued students, who were weak and in dirty clothes, were taken to the Oro-Ago Divisional Police Headquarters for medical preparations before being transported to Ilorin.
While at the station, soldiers arrived in a convoy, overpowered the police, and forcefully took the students without a proper handover.
The Kwara police condemned the soldiers' actions as disrespectful and unacceptable, promising to report the incident to higher authorities.
Kogi State's Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, noted that these eight students were the last remaining captives after 21 others had been rescued earlier and two had been killed by their abductors.
The kidnappers had invaded the university on May 9, abducting students attending a tutorial for their semester exams.
The state government expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, and various security agencies for their roles in the rescue operation.
They also thanked local hunters and Governor AbdulRahmam AbdulRazak of Kwara State for their support and cooperation.
Governor Usman Ododo stated the state's commitment to enhancing security, particularly through the Safe School Initiative, and spoke on efforts to ensure education access, such as making education free up to the secondary level and covering examination fees for students.
