Alex was beaten to death by his colleagues over alleged phone theft last weekend.
Initially, the university expelled the students involved.
On Monday, the vice-chancellor, Timothy Adebayo, announced that 20 students were arrested and handed over to the police.
Following preliminary investigations, 12 of them were detained.
Adebayo stated that the university had implemented measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
He also announced a three-day mourning period for the late student, including fasting and prayers from Wednesday to Sunday.
The porter who was on duty during the incident has also been detained.
The university is now encouraging students to report any concerning activities to the vice-chancellor and other management staff.
