KACHIBLOG had reported how a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Chioma Okoli to be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre over the review of tomato products made by Erisco Foods Limited on Facebook.
Okoli was arraigned on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Federal High Court in Abuja before Hon. Justice Peter Lifu.
She pleaded not guilty to the two counts of conspiracy and cyberstalking levelled against her and was remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre till Friday, May 31, 2024, for a ruling on her bail application.
The women groups, in a statement jointly signed on Friday, called on all Nigerian women to join them in boycotting Erisco Foods products with immediate effect.
They also called on the government to come to the aid of Chioma, criticizing its silence on the matter.
The groups argued that in other countries, government agencies would be investigating the product issues rather than allowing the matter to be handled by those prioritizing profit over public health and well-being.
The statement exposed several reasons for the boycott, including the harassment and detention of Chioma Okoli, the stress and trauma inflicted on her leading to the loss of her pregnancy, her loss of earnings and livelihood, threats to her life, and the abuse of her human rights.
They spoke on her right to freedom of speech and expression, as guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution, and expressed concerns about her ability to get justice in Nigeria.
The statement concluded by reiterating the call for a boycott and urging the government to address the situation.
The statement was signed by numerous women’s groups, including Women Advocates and Research Documentation Centre (WARDC), Purple Woman Foundation, Amnesty International Nigeria, and many others.
