Recall that this comes after rumors suggested that a minimum age of 18 years had been imposed for these exams.
In a recent briefing in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, stated that the government has not placed any age limits on WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB exams.
However, he confirmed that starting from 2025, only candidates aged 18 and above will be eligible to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and gain entry into universities, in line with the National Policy on Education.
Dr. Sununu explained, "There have been misunderstandings regarding the age limit for these exams. The only age restriction we have discussed relates to the UTME. The National Policy on Education outlines that a child should begin primary education at age six, completing secondary school by age 18. This aligns with our policy for university entry."
The Minister also added the theme for the upcoming 2024 World Literacy Day, "Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace," and spoke on the importance of early education in a child's mother tongue.
Prof. Akpama Iboro, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult, and Non-Formal Education, added that the theme emphasizes the value of multilingual education in preserving cultural and linguistic diversity.
The Commission remains dedicated to promoting literacy across Nigeria, acknowledging the challenges of educating in a multilingual environment.
