JUST IN: Dele Giwa: Court Dismisses Rights Violation Suit Against Nigerian Government

The ECOWAS Court has dismissed a case brought by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda against the Federal Government of Nigeria, which alleged violations of the human rights of several journalists.

The Court ruled that it had jurisdiction over the cases of Omololu Falobi, Godwin Agbroko, Abayomi Ogundeji, and Edo Sule-Ugbagwu, but not over Dele Giwa, Bolade Fasisi, and Edward Olalekan Ayo-Ojo due to the timing of their deaths.

Justice Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves stated that the cases of Giwa, Fasisi, and Ayo-Ojo were too old for the Court to consider, as they were specific events rather than ongoing violations.

The Court also determined that the Media Rights Agenda lacked standing because it did not have authorization from the victims' families.

Consequently, the case was dismissed
